Colors From the Land

The land is alive with color! Join Carolyn Sweeney of Strata Ink for a 3 day workshop on the land and in the studio. Using simple methods we will turn both plants and minerals into quality artist materials. Carolyn will lead you through the whole process from foraging to finished watercolors, inks, and crayons. We will cover safety, responsible foraging, lightfastness, watercolor binder recipes, mulling, lake pigments, botanical inks, and Maya blue. All students will leave with a set of handmade mineral watercolor paints, botanical inks, and a few crayons.

A basic materials list will be provided upon registration.

Date: August 3 – 5, 2023
Time: 9:00am – 4:00pm
Place: Long Ridge Farm, 116 Paine Road, Westmoreland, NH

Carolyn Sweeney is an artist who teaches classes on foraging for mineral pigments, making watercolors from scratch, botanical inks, and natural pigment crayons. She runs a business in Portland, Oregon called Strata Ink where she sells handmade natural pigment inks and crayons. She has a BA in Fine Art from Whitman College but believes her most valued knowledge has come from time spent out on the land and tending to her multitude of natural color experiments in the studio.

The workshop setting at Long Ridge Farm takes place on a New England farm in the Southwest corner of New Hampshire, within 2 hours of Boston, MA; 1.5 hours of Hartford, CT; and 20 minutes from I-91, Keene, NH; Brattleboro, VT; and Walpole, NH. The workspace is set in a great hall within a chestnut post and beam barn with an open environment yet protected from the elements. Foraging is at our fingertips! A portable toilet and washing area are within a few steps of the workspace. The space is spectacular and welcoming.  Although we do not have onsite lodging there are plenty of options within 15-20 minutes of the farm.
